2.   Vocabulary Quiz 1 [~20 minutes]
3.   Words of the Day Presentation: Patricia
4.   Homework Check
5.   Review Homework: (1) Check your answers; (2) Identify any affixes used.
6.   Collocations: Handout + Examples
7.   Practice: Identify the Collocations
a.   Identifying Collocations: Google
                                     i.        Look for a high frequency, at least more than 1,000,000
                                    ii.        Difference between “catch” and “get”?
                        --catch a job OR get a job
b.   Medical Collocations
c.   Paragraph about the Amish

Homework:
1.   Complete the Mid-Semester Feedback.

2.   Make flashcards for all of the vocabulary words in ‘I Identify As Black,’ Rachel Dolezal Says in TV Interview. You can make these on quizlet or by hand.

  1. Words of the Day Presentation: Victoria
  2. Homework Check
  3. Vocabulary Discussion: In small groups compare your definitions, and let me know if you have any questions.
  4. Morphosemantics (Parts of Speech) Practice: Rachel Dolezal [handout]
  5. Spelling: Plural Nouns [handout]
  6. Game: Synonyms & Antonyms
    1. What is a synonym? An antonym?
    2. We will make two teams. I will write a word on the board and say synonym or antonym. The first team to guess correctly gets a point. The team with the most points wins. :)
  7. Remember! Vocabulary Quiz 1 over “Some Major U.S. American Values” on Tuesday!

Homework:
  1. Complete the Morphosemantics Homework: Rachel Dolezal.
  2. Study for Vocabulary Quiz 1 over the vocabulary from “Some Major U.S. American Values.” This quiz will be Tuesday July 30th in class.

    1. Isabel will present. Make sure to write the words she teaches you in your vocabulary notebook.
  4. Quizlet.com
    1. Go to quizlet.com.
    2. Create an account (click “sign up”).
    3. Click “create a set.”
    4. Enter the vocabulary words from “Some Major U.S. American Values.”
  5. Reading: “Some Major U.S. American Values”
    1. In groups, discuss:
      1. Questions about the content of the article and/or vocabulary words.
      2. What is the reading about?
      3. What did you learn about American culture?
  6. Affixes
    1. Prefixes & Suffixes: What are some?
    2. Handout + Practice


Homework:

    1. I will show you your grade at the end of each week (starting next week). You can e-mail me if you have questions.
  3. Words of the Day Instructions + Sign-Up (on class website)
    1. 30% of 028V Grade
  4. “Some Major U.S. American Values”
    1. Vocabulary Notebook Explanation (15% of your grade)
      1. Do not lose this! It is very important!
    2. In small groups, go to Longman Dictionary and look up each word. Write each in your vocabulary notebook.

Homework:
  1. Write the rest of the underlined words from Some Major U.S. American Values in your vocabulary notebook.
  2. Read Some Major U.S. American Values.

Words of The Day Assignment/Instructions



Assignment:
·         Each day one student will teach the class two vocabulary words.
·         Each vocabulary word will be from the 2,000 most frequent words in English Language Texts handout.
·         Please choose words you do not know.
·         Make a PowerPoint to teach your two words to the class.

Rules:                      
·         You can only choose new words; i.e. words that another student has not taught.
·         When a student has taught you a word, put an X next to it on your list.
·         Write both words in your vocabulary notebook.

·         If you have a question, please ask me (Heather) immediately (=right away). Ask before your presentation.
·         You can email me at hmehrten@umd.edu if you forget to ask me in class.


The Words of the Day Presentations are worth 30% of your grade.
