Schedule:
  1. “The Complicated Political History of the Confederate Flag”
    1. Vocabulary review
      1. It seems like everyone did better on the last quiz, so let’s do some similar activities. :)
      2. Remembering the Words:
        1. Study the words (discuss them in groups).
        2. Write down all the words.
        3. Write down all the definitions.
      3. Vocabulary Bingo
    2. Syllable Stress: Suffixes
      1. What is stress (in pronunciation)?
      2. Handout (List of Suffixes and their Influences on Syllable Stress)


Homework: (1) Study  for the final vocabulary quiz on Thursday 7-23; this quiz will test you on the vocabulary from The Complicated History of the Confederate Flag.

Day 10 Schedule & Homework

MEI 028 V- Vocabulary Elective

Thursday 7-16-15
Schedule:
  1. Vocabulary Quiz: “Food in America”
  2. “The Complicated Political History of the Confederate Flag”
    1. Discuss the words you underlined, and what each means.
    2. As a class, let’s create a vocabulary list. :) [Goal: At least 20 words]
    3. Identify the affixes in the vocabulary words.
    4. Syllable Stress: Suffixes
      1. What is stress (in pronunciation)?
      2. Handout (List of Suffixes and their Influences on Syllable Stress)
      3. Practice
    5. -ed endings review
      1. Identify all the words that end in -ed in the first three paragraphs of the article. Discuss how the -ed ending is pronounced.
  3. Pass out updated grades & attendance/participation grade (10% of 028V grade)

Homework: (1) Complete your vocabulary notebook (15% of your grade) & vocabulary flashcards (15% of your grade). Be ready to submit your notebook (It will be returned to you Thursday) & print your vocabulary flashcards. (2) Start studying for the final vocabulary quiz on Thursday 7-23; this quiz will test you on the vocabulary from The Complicated History of the Confederate Flag.

Schedule:
  1. Next Week’s Schedule: Check your e-mail.
  2. Homework Check
    1. Flashcards for the 21 words from “Food in America” via quizlet.com or by hand.
    2. 10 words from “The Complicated Political History of the Confederate Flag.”
  3. Words of the Day Presentation: Rawan
  4. “The Complicated Political History of the Confederate Flag” [~1 hour]
    1. In pairs/groups: (1) Write in one sentence what the article is about [=the main idea]; (2) Write a one-sentence summary of each section.
  5. Review/study for the “Food in America” vocabulary quiz (last half hour)
    1. Study
    2. Game: Without looking at the article, write down as many of the vocabulary words as possible from “Food in America.” The team with the most words wins. :)
    3. Game: Now, write as many definitions as you can. The team with the most correct answers wins. :)

Homework: (1) Study the “Food in America” vocabulary words. We will have a quiz on Thursday.

  1. Homework Check // Return Quiz & Distribute Up-to-Date Grades
  2. Words of the Day Presentation: Tom
  3. “Food in America”
    1. Most Important Vocabulary
      1. In pairs/groups: (1) Negotiate the 15 most vocabulary important words from the words you (all) wrote in your vocabulary notebook; (2) Discuss each word’s part of speech and write an example sentence together.
      2. Class Discussion: Creating a Word List [Goal: max 20 words total]
    2. Morphosemantics  
      1. Divide into two groups. Each group will be responsible for 5 words.
      2. In Microsoft Word, make a morphosemantics chart for 5 of your words. Be prepared to share your chart with the class when you finish.
    3. Collocations Practice
      1. In pairs/groups, match each word with its partner (five sets per group).
      2. Then, check in the article “Food in America.”
      3. Then, write an example sentence for each phrasal verb.
      4. Now, teach your collocations to the class. :)

Homework:
  1. Make flashcards for the 20 words from “Food in America” via quizlet.com or by hand.
  2. Re-read “The Complicated Political History of the Confederate Flag.” Identify 10 more new words, and write each in your vocabulary notebook.

    3. Matching: Match each word with its definition
    4. Smurf the Words
      1. I will give you slips of paper.
      2. On each slip, write a sentence with one of the vocabulary words from the Rachel Dolezal article. Underline the vocabulary word you use.
      3. DO NOT SHOW YOUR SENTENCES TO EACH OTHER!!!!!!!
      4. When everyone finishes, we will play. :)
